Just like bees, we want to create a platform for generous, creative and humble collaboration – shaping a new appreciation of human, financial, and environmental resources in healthcare.
The Bee Prize of the Year is awarded to an early career researcher from a low- or middle-income country – who is generously contributing to this vision.
The prize provide funding for the recipient to present their work at an international scientific conference. In 2023, Karina Raygoza from Mexico won the Bee Prize, and went to the Preventing Overdiagnosis Conference in Copenhagen – find out how it went in the Q&A below!
How was Copenhagen?
Copenhagen was fantastic! The weather was lovely, and the people were incredibly friendly. I had the chance to see iconic sights like the Little Mermaid, went on a walking tour with newfound conference friends, explored Nyhavn, admired Copenhagen City Hall, and indulged in delicious food at Torvehallerne. It was an unforgettable experience filled with great weather and great company!
Tell us about the project you presented!
The project I presented was a preliminary pilot of an umbrella review focusing on individually oriented lifestyle interventions, examining their effects on smoking cessation. We aimed to understand the true impact of these interventions on behavior change. Our goal was to emphasize the importance of distinguishing between evidence supporting the benefits of healthy habits and the evidence for the efficacy of lifestyle interventions. However, based on our results, we did not find any significant difference between lifestyle interventions and usual care. This project highlighted the widespread adoption of individually oriented lifestyle interventions (IOLIs) across healthcare systems while acknowledging the lack of robust evidence supporting their efficacy.
What was the best thing about going to the conference?
The best part was undoubtedly having the opportunity to present our project and engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and health systems worldwide. Networking with experts and exchanging opinions was invaluable. Additionally, finally meeting colleagues I’d collaborated with online in person was a highlight in itself!
